Kothagudem: State Women’s Commission chairperson Tripuraneni Venkataratnam has expressed concern over the child marriages in rural areas and laid emphasis on sensitising women on legislations relevant for them. Addressing the media at Singareni Collieries Illandu guesthouse on Thursday, she said the government was urged to appoint an officer of the rank of the SI to report to the government on child marriages. Stating that rehabilitating the child brides in State homes was of no use, she said the child must be allowed to be with her parents with regular monitoring by the officials.

“The Commission had succeeded in getting the child marriages registered in 2002 by getting a legislation passed. As it became difficult to stall child marriages with the help of the legislation, the Commission sought police support to keep a check on child marriages under 2013 legislation,” she said. The Commission’s chief later made a powerpoint presentation and video screening of the two-day awareness programme to be taken up for women in the district. District Women and Child Welfare Officer Jhansi Lakshmibai and others attended the press meet.
