Khammam: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will strive for a political front that could withstand the BJP, Congress and the TRS, the newly-elected Khammam district committee secretary Nunna Nageswara Rao said.

Speaking to the media persons here on Thursday for first time as the secretary of the district committee, he said the party’s agenda was to exert pressure on the State government to speed up ongoing irrigation projects in the region besides fighting for the cause of distressed sections.

“Efforts are on to float a political dais christened as the Bahujana Democratic Front that includes all the like-minded parties and forums barring the BJP, Congress and the TRS,” Rao said. He said the CPM would continue its tirade against the government until it fulfils the needs of the downtrodden sections. Special impetus will be laid on issues relating to minorities, Dalits and women, he asserted.

The onus is on government to fulfill the long-pending demand of the farmers by bringing Godavari waters to Palair Balancing Reservoir to ensure irrigation facility to 2.58 lakh acres, he said, stressing the need for changing the design of Sitarama Project. He also demanded the government to revive the several irrigation projects that fell defunct over the years.

Referring to the tenant farmers, Rao urged the government to provide fertiliser subsidy directly to them. Pointing out the alleged diesel scam in the Khammam Municipal Corporation, Rao demanded a probe into it.

It may be noted here that a 37-member district committee headed by Nunna Nageswara Rao was unanimously elected at the 20th district meeting of the party held at Wyra on Wednesday. Rao, who is also the Rythu Sangham State vice-president, hails from a middleclass family. His father Pullaiah was a group commander in the Telangana Rythanga Sayudha Poratam. Rao who started his political career with the CPI-ML New Democracy joined the CPM in 2005. Since then he worked for the party in several capacities.
