Khammam: Mahatama Jyotirao Phule fought against untouchability and inspired people to fight for the justice, observed State leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Pothineni Sudharshan Rao here on Wednesday.

The CPI-M leaders organised celebrations on the occasion of birth anniversary of the Jyotirao Phule by offering floral tributes to his portrait. The celebrations were held under the leadership of Yerra Srikanth here at Sundarayya Bhavan.

Speaking on the occasion, P Sudharshan Rao said Jyotirao Phule had fought against inequality in society. He also waged a struggle against social evils. He said the caste division had still been persisting. He underscored the need to wage a fight against caste discrimination.

He promoted education for Dalits and women. He stressed the need for promoting education as it was only weapon to fight against social evils.District Secretary of the CPI-M Nunna Nageshwar Rao said Jyothirao Phule was a great social reformer who fought against social evils like child marriages and superstitions. He exhorted the youth to draw inspiration from him and fight against superstitions in the society.

CPI-M leaders T Nagaraju, DYFI Basheer, PRSS M Upendhar, R Prakash, AFI Ch. Ramesh, Ashok, Hemanth, V K Rama Rao, Prasad, V Veera Bhadram, P Venkateshwarlu and Pulla Rao were present at the programme.
