December 10th of every year is observed as the International Human Rights day by the world. It is is very difficult to define what is meant human rights, but we can classify that it is right which is inalienable and inherited by our birth. These human rights are not pronounced and made by any legislature or authority, these rights are apparently available to human beings. In broader sense we can classify that human rights are those rights indispensable to human existence, without these human cannot survive.
We go on observing the human rights these rights were very much available in ancient Indian history during times of Ramayana and Mahabarata. After abducting Seetha, the king of Lanka Ravana had given time to Seetha to change her stance for marrying him, the many incidence of Mahabarata, especially before to start of Kurushestra war mediation was made by Lord Krishna and war is fought in between armed forces leaving behind common civilians symbolishes value of human rights during those times. In the n world history first time we see the reference of these rights when Cyrus Cylinder, King of Prussia, pronounced it soon after the Babylonean invasion in 539 B.C. In our country we can see importance of human rights during reign of King Ashoka, as he erected many pillars in his kingdom. In 622 A.D. the founder of Islamic religion Prophet Mohammed made reference of it in holy book Quran. In western world these rights were identified in England in year 1215 by declaration of Magna Carta and it resulted into strengthening of human rights movement in the world. Again the American war of independence, the French revolution in 17th centaury further cemented the human rights era.
It is primary duty of every state to strictly respect the human rights of individuals in all forms, but its violations are became a common phenomena in every country in the globe, particularly during wars, civil unrests, human rights are blatantly being violated. When the colonolisation was started in 16th centaury in the world every colonial power had abused the economic, social and political rights. During the first world war, the use of cluster bombs and atomic bombs and during the second world war using of nuclear bombs have resulted into untold miseries on the people and mockery of human rights.
.The succeeding world wars resulted into all forms of violation of human rights and to avoid such recurrence of incidence, then world leaders Frnaklin Roosevelt, Lord Atlee, made efforts and succeeded in establishment of the United Nations in 1945. The United Nations charter mandates that it is duty of every state to respect and observe the human rights and to give more value to human rights the General Assembly had passed a resolution on 10th of December, 1948 at Geneva declaring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Document. This is one of most monumental development in preserving, protecting the human rights in the world arena.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights covenants contains thirty important articles which touches every walk of human live, personal liberty, equality, freedom of speech, dignity and fraternity, economic, social and political freedoms. Our country also actively participated in the framing of these covenants and when we were enacting the constitution of India we have inserted much of in form of fundamental rights, directive principles of state policy and other domestic legislations.
Again in 1966 under the agis of the United Nations give more effect to the economic, social, civil and political rights two separate covenants were signed and it is also mandated that every member country should legislate it in domestically. In addition to these the world countries have arrived regional human rights covenants like, European, African, American and SAARC etc. The United Nations for protection of human rights throughout the world constituted the United Nations Human Rights Commission at Geneva, any one can lodge compliant directly to it if there is violation of human rights.
In spite of all these human rights are flagrantenly being violated almost everywhere in the world, we have seeing such abundant violations in Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Sri Lanka,Iraq, Mynmar these are some tip f the iceberg. In country in addition to inserting international provisions in the constitution for protection of human rights, the parliament enacted the National Human Rights Protection Act 1993 which provides different mechanisms like the National, State level human rights commissions and also the District level human rights courts for protection and preservation of human rights.
Though we have strong legal machineries failing to protect common man human rights and promote and preserve such rights many non governmental organisations like Amensty International, Human Rights Watch, Peoples Union for Democratic Rights etc. have doing yeoman service, in spite of this every minute passing by there are rampant violations of human rights going on throughout the world irrespective of economic, social development.
