At least 12 alleged left-wing extremists of the Telangana State Committee of CPI (Maoist) were killed in an exchange of fire with the Greyhound anti-insurgency police force near the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border during the early hours of Friday.

A senior Maoist leader, Hari Bushan, known for his military tactics is suspected to be among those who were killed in the encounter.

The police are yet to identify the bodies of the alleged extremists killed in the gun battle that took place in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district around 6.30am.

An injured Greyhounds constable has been airlifted to a city hospital in a chopper while the bodies of the slain Naxals were shifted to the government hospital at Bhadarachalam in Kothagudem district.
