During the short term discussion on the issue of helping handloom weavers in the legislative body on Tuesday, Handlooms and Textiles Minister KT Rama Rao said, “Our weavers are gaining standing throughout out the country. After agriculture, we have a key sector in Telangana - Handloom weaving which was not given much prominence during the last government. In 2002, it was said that many of the handloom weavers committed suicide and in 2007 suicide rate rose in Sircilla.”

The Minister further said that the loan waiver scheme for handloom weavers is being implemented according to the plan adding that the TRS government is committed in this regard. He also mentioned that the Batukhamma sarees will be made in Siricila once again. KTR said that last year, some of the sarees from Surat were destroyed and the Centre did not cooperate with the weavers.

He even stated that actress Samantha, who is the ambassador of handlooms in Telangana did not even give a rupee from the state government for the role and stated that the focus needs to be on the welfare for the people.
