Telangana State Groundwater Department after studying the groundwater levels (dependent primarily on rainfall) of March this year stated that the water levels have reached the levels of May 2017 two months in advance.

According to the report which analyzed the data on the depth of water level of 810 wells, the average groundwater level for the State in March 2018 is 11.90 metres BGL while 2017 had 10.96 metres BGL for the same period.

The report released on Thursday said that the groundwater levels in the state have fallen to a depth of more than 20 metres below ground level (BGL) in the centrally located districts - Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool, Siddipet, Sangareddy and Rajanna Sircilla.

As per the report, these districts cover about eight percent or 9,342 sq km of the geographical area of the state.

The Groundwater Department mentioned that nine of the 31 districts received deficit rainfall ranging between -22 to -38 percent while 17 districts received normal rainfall ranging between 1 to 15 percent and the rest of five districts received excess rainfall between 24 to 44 percent. Also, 67 of the 584 mandals in Telangana recorded an average water table depth of more than 20 metres below ground level.
