UK's deputy high commissioner to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Andrew Fleming on Sunday morning set up a great example by joining the GHMC sanitation workers in picking up plastic littered at Mailardevpally at Rajendranagar.

The 'Beat Plastic Pollution' campaign witnessed participation also from Deputy Commissioner of Rajendranagar circle Vijaya Laxmi, Mailardevepally corporator T Srinivas Reddy, Rajendranagar circle AMOH, sanitary inspectors, and citizens.

The initiative of the campaign is officials and citizens coming together on World Environment Day to clean up the surroundings.

Fleming, spent several hours on the job, as a part of the campaign through which several bagfuls of plastic were collected.

Plastic waste dumped on a piece of private land was segregated by officials and volunteers. Besides plastic, bottles, paper, and mixed garbage were picked from the land. Segregated waste was then sold to ITC which will further segregate and recycle it.

According to the GHMC officials, penalties should be imposed on those who litter in public places with plastic and garbage further calling for a ban on the manufacture of single-use plastic bags.
