The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to introduce 10 electric autos, for collection and disposal of garbage in the city.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao had recently announced that electric vehicles would be introduced to replace the diesel trucks used for garbage collection.

According to a press release, the pilot project is being provided by a city-based company and will run for two months and a decision will be taken based on the results.

The electric autos run for about 110 km after a charge of maximum in three hours and can carry a load of 800 kg. These vehicles, apart from helping curb pollution levels, will also help reduce the operational costs of the vehicles for garbage collection. Compared to the operational cost of a diesel vehicle, which is Rs 3 per km, an electric auto will charge Rs 0.50 per km.

In this regard, GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that the move will reduce non-compliance, improve per vehicle productivity, eliminate manual tracking for monitoring and escalations.
