GHMC demolition drive: 47 structures pulled down in one day

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is undertaking a massive drive to demolish old and dilapidated structures in Hyderabad ahead of Monsoon. In a single day on June 18, the GHMC demolished 47 structures - 15 in the Kukatpally Zone, 12 in the Khairatabad Zone, 8 in the Secunderabad Zone, 6 in the Serlingampally Zone, three structures were demolished in the Charminar Zone and LB Nagar Zone each.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao in a review meeting on June 12 had issued instructions to senior officials in this regard.
The GHMC in a press release said, "An action plan was prepared to identify most dangerous structures in each circle of GHMC and a proposal was submitted for demolition through a special drive.”
According to a survey this year, the Municipal Body stated that 1194 buildings had been identified, out of which 413 buildings had already been demolished and the drive will continue until the remaining 734 structures are demolished or repaired by the occupants.
The GHMC is also taking up other activities ahead of monsoon by deploying teams to tackle waterlogging, inundation and other problems in low lying areas.
