Three girls who were allegedly sold by their father for Rs 5 lakh in Nandyal town of Andhra Pradesh has revealed the existence of an age-old practice of ‘Kanyasulkam’ or bride money. According to the reports, the accused, Pasupuleti Maddilety is an auto driver and was reeling in debts.

Without the consent of his estranged wife, Venkatamma, he collected Kanyasulkam (a form of reverse dowry where the family of the bride receives money from the groom) for his three daughters.

Upon knowing this, Venkatamma approached the police and lodged a complaint alleging that Maddilety agreed to sell the girls. A case was registered against Maddilety and he was remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, ICDS officials rescued the girls and sent them to a rehabilitation home.
