On Thursday the BBMP along with the traffic police have conducted a joint operation against the footpath encroachment and illegal vendors, from Bommanahalli Junction to Kodichikkanahalli. As a part of the exercise the two-wheeler vehicles which were parked on the footpath were towed away.

Gavisiddappa the Madiwala Traffic Inspector had said, “It was a joint operation between the BBMP and traffic police department. The drive was against illegal vendors and two-wheelers parked on the footpath. The vehicles were towed away. We will continue the drive on Friday as well.”

The Joint Commissioner of Bommanahalli Zone, Dr Soujanya A had said that, “Begur Main Road is already a very congested road. On top of that, small shop owners place their boards and stuff on the roads and block pedestrian movement. Vendors too occupy space with pushcarts, blocking traffic. So we formed a team of BBMP officials, health inspectors and traffic police to rid the road of encroachments. We also removed flexes and banners placed on poles and near the shops as it has been already been banned by BBMP earlier. We only towed away vehicles and let the encroachers off with a warning but further violations will be taken up seriously.”

She also said that, “Many people park their vehicles carelessly and go shopping. Such cases will be dealt with seriously. We will fine them and book cases in the next drive.”

As per the officials, drives like these will be conducted at the nearby locations as. “It will be a continuous exercise. We did not bookcases this time as they were petty vendors,” he said.
