BENGALURU: The Yelahanka police have held an organised gang of racketeers who are suspected to be faking the designs, colour schemes and shapes of biscuits which are manufactured by major brands such as Britannia and selling them in Bengaluru and neighbouring areas.

A corporate intelligence firm which has been representing Britannia has registered a complaint with the Yelahanka police, accusing a company in their jurisdiction.

The Yelahanka police sources have said that, “After a complaint on Wednesday, police raided the accused agency, Rinkesh Enterprises, near Apurva hospital on BB Road, Yelahanka. Fake Britannia biscuit wrappers were found in the godown, but they contained biscuits manufactured by another firm. The colour, design and logo of Britannia have been faked to sell biscuits.”

As per the sources, the corporate intelligence firm was on the trail of the fraud after it was brought to their knowledge that the distributors have been supplying fake Britannia biscuits to the retailers at railway stations, bus stands and rural pockets around Bengaluru. A team belonging to the company had exposed the fake wrappers which were resembling Britannia products that are being used to sell the biscuits purportedly which are made by a Hyderabad-based company.

The sources said that the fraud which has enabled the distributors to make a profit of Rs 2-3 on every Rs 10 packet of biscuits, against the 50 paise they used to earn from selling the genuine products. “The fake biscuits and wrappers were made in Andhra Pradesh, particularly Hyderabad,” said police.
