BENGALURU: The BBMP has taken the decision of dropping a plan for another steel flyover from Minerva Circle to Hudson Circle along JC Road.

The JC Road project was conceived two decades ago. But as the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd came up with a flyover loop in the area as part of its elevated corridor project, it was scrapped.

Last November the project drew a flak after the successful bidder had quoted ₹179.2 crore, up ₹44.2 crore from the estimated cost of ₹135 crore. On January 3 the BBMP commissioner was made aware of the issue which was directed by the empowered committee headed by the additional chief secretary Mahendra Jain who had directed the civic agency to go for tendering again as the quoted price was too high.

A note from the urban development department said, “The flyover proposal sent by the commissioner was examined. The BBMP sought approval for the administrative and tendering process, but it has been directed to re tender the process.”

“The civic agency is facing an acute [landfill] problem. The Bellahalli quarry pit area is almost full and if the civic agency doesn’t find an alternative site soon, the city may face a huge garbage crisis. So the commissioner proposed that the funds earmarked for the JC Nagar steel bridge be used for this purpose in Jakkur, Thanisandra and Byatarayanapura,” a source said.
