Day three at Lakmé Fashion Winter/Festive 2015 saw a spectacular showcase by Anita Dongre, as she celebrated India’s treasure chest of crafts on what she termed the longest runway ever, from the heart of India’s villages to the ramp at LFW. The set which had an installation of a giant banyan tree with vines tumbling down the stage, was a perfect entrance for the models to walk through and set the stage for what was to come.

The historically referenced show took the guests on a journey, capturing the rich ethic impressions of India in contemporary tales. The show exuberated the magic of timeless tales that spoke today’s language. Luxury prêt never had it so good!
The evening began with a beautifully evocative film to tribute the hands of history. Our craft patron, Dia Mirza looked alluring in a linen maxi gown with SEWA embroidery, completed with beautiful Grassroot earrings and cuffs, as she opened the show to a packed audience. The front row of this collection exuded glamour and elegance with Shabana Azmi, Sangeeta Bijlani, Sona Mohapatra Gul Panag, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Sanjay Suri, Narendra Kumar and Malavika Sangghvi to name a few. All looked stunning as they donned their favourite Anita Dongre creation:

It was an evening of surreal traditional charm and a beautifully fitted melange of art and fashion, as models displayed the various crafts of India taking form in contemporary silhouettes for the modern global women of today. When 22 artisans dressed in a traditional attire, followed the walk of the models to proudly stake claim to the craft skills on show, is what tug at the heartstrings of the audience, resulting in a standing ovation. The handcrafted traditions showcased had the stamp of history and the fingerprints of modern design to create global appeal.
“Handcrafted Traditions in Contemporary Tales” was highlighted with gorgeous patterns and timelessness of the craft. Right from a whimsical collection of stunning and exquisite Ahir embroidery from Gujarat, the poetic art of ikat from Karnataka and Hyderabad, Intricate Warli patterns depicting human life and nature in monosyllabic styles, Hand block prints, or the rare and gorgeous silk fables from Bhagalpur; our craft traditions embody the highest levels of excellence, and it is this beauty and grace that translates to the clothes.
The show also marked the debut of Anita’s first collection of eco-conscious bags. Functional without compromising on style and true to the brand policy, each product in our handcrafted bag range is unique and one of a kind where no two bags will be alike. Also on display was an all-natural line of jewellery, using elements that are a seamless fusion of nature’s beauty & India’s impeccable craft.
With a sustainable cruelty free line, Anita Dongre Grassroot is testament to the fact that it’s possible to be fashionable yet rooted in tradition and be environmentally friendly at the same time.
