An online festival dedicated to India’s ethnic ‘temporary tattoo” art formCraftsvilla.com, India's largest online ethnic marketplace, selling sarees, lehengas, anarkalis, salwar suits, accessories, decor and artefacts"etc; has taken its integration with ethnic a step further with the Craftsvilla Billion Mehndi Festival.

Craftsvilla.com believes that the lure of mehendi, is quite irresistible and that theres a mehndi design, waiting to be drawn on every woman’s palm, hand, back of the neck, feet, wherever, she chooses! And men are not to be left behind either, to mark special occasions!

Monica Gupta, inceptor Craftsvilla Billion Mehndi Festival adds, “ to me, the mehndi has always been sexier than tattoos. For one, its completely natural. Whats more important is that you are not stuck with it. You can change the design, as you evolve, which is not possible in the case of a tattoo. Its the coolest body art known to man.”

A variant of mehendi is the ‘ alta’ which has evidence in the Hindu Upanishads. Alta has been found as one of the Make-Up stages of ‘Solah Shringar’ or 16 Bridal Adornments. It is also traced back into the mythological depictions of Lord Krishna seen applying Alta on to his beloved Radha’s feet.

While most of north, west and central India refers to this as mehndi, alta is more popular in eastern India. In the south of India, mehndi is called ‘gorintaaku’ in telugu, “goranti” in Kannada, "marudhaani" in Tamil and “mylanchi” in Kerala. Mehndi is also traditionally used for special occasions like holidays, birthdays and weddings in Africa, Pakistan, India, and the Middle East.

Soha Ali Khan, who has joined the Crafstvilla.com family to be the face of its Billion Mehndi Festival says, "I love mehndi. I also love that Craftsvilla.com is doing so much to keep ethnic alive. Its very important for us to promulgate our culture for future generations. And yes, Im also submitting my entry for the craftsvilla.com billion mehndi festival!"

Manoj Gupta, of Craftsvilla.com adds, “ Mehndi has an integrated national appeal in India, and is bridge between the traditional and the modern. Mehndi is not just a day in the wedding function. There are karva chauth mehndi parties, mehndi brunches before festivals such as diwali and holi and teenagers love it too! Craftsvilla.com identifies with the versatility and range of audience that is captivated by mehndi"

As a part of the Craftsvilla Billion Mehndi Festival, mehndi artists from all over the country will be blogging on craftsvilla.com.

There is a call for participation to men and women all over the country, who will upload their photos with mehndi on the site. The three mehndi photos that are liked the most, will win prizes upto 1 lac. These mehndi designs will be available on craftsvilla.com for posterity.

The Craftsvilla Billion Mehndi Festival, is the third unique marketing activity being done by Craftsvilla.com. They just concluded Craftsvilla Miss Ethnic with Kareena Kapoor Khan and celebrated World Ethnic Day with Vidya Balan on 19th June.
