"New Traditions"
New Artistic Expressions
To support emerging creatives across multiple disciplines, Lane Crawford has commissioned eight contemporary artists to create unique visual installations in its Greater China stores and online flagship Lanecrawford.com. Artists Andrea Minini, Angel Chen, Desmond Leung, Hui Hoi Kiu, Huijun Guan, Mosaic Art Projects, Jan Zhou, and Yeli Gu join Lane Crawford to celebrate Chinese New Year traditions and themes through a modern, artistic perspective. Milan-based designer, Andrea Minini, known for his animal illustrations that feature textured moiré patterns, has collaborated with Lane Crawford to design a gold monkey graphic. The graphic creates an unusual intersection between natural forms and mathematics, delivering a compelling sense of motion through natural curves that highlight the shape of a monkey.

In Hong Kong, Mosaic Art Projects, led by visual artists Karen Pow and Chao Harn Kae, presents Percipient Monkey, a larger-than-life papier-mâché sculpture of a monkey that references the traditional Chinese art of paper-cutting, an expression of good wishes and hope. Hong Kong-based media artist, Desmond Leung, merges traditional and modern mediums of paint and ink with digital animations to create a new visual language. Leung's Scatter Bloom is an LED motion installation that depicts flowers blossoming in vibrant colours to symbolise a flourishing new year. These moving images are reflected in mirrors to create a dynamic infinite effect.
In celebration of the year of the monkey, Chinese digital artist Huijun Guan has created a video installation entitled Monkey Mansion that explores Chinese elements in architecture and old Chinese idioms. Viewers peeking through the windows of the mansion will see three moving monkeys that represent the phrase, 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil'. Hui Hoi Kiu, a recent graduate from Hong Kong Baptist University's Visual Arts programme, presents 81 Steps to Spring, an art piece inspired by the ancient Chinese practice of counting down to spring, which begins on the first day of the winter solstice. Hui has printed 80 white tissue boxes with a blue and white porcelain pattern to represent the days leading up to the Lunar New Year and the start of the new season, with the final tissue box featuring a hand-drawn red and gold monkey pattern. Lastly, Chinese fashion designer Jan Zhou's embossed paintings, The Yellow Peony No. 1, 2, 3 and 4, are featured at the Lane Crawford Pacific Place Home Store, bringing a touch of festive spirit through contemporary art.
