They say vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to other, this philosophy has been well imbibed by Aashish Singh Tyagi who debuted as an artist with an art exhibition of Black and White Charcoal Nudes at Art Today, New Delhi in 1997. His journey led him to a stint at NDTV as a graphics artist during which period he began experimenting with black and white charcoal nudes almost as if to neutralize the cold, digital requirements of being a successful graphic artist.

His eclectic work drew attention in Bombay's art circle and he was invited to be the video installations head at FabLab – a radical New Media Art collective in 2003. What followed was a rollercoaster ride into the carnival that is the Indian Film industry working on a variety of film projects ranging from ‘1:40 Ki Last Local’ to ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ to working on the documentary “100 years of Bollywood” for the Cannes Film Festival 2011. Ashish has a penchant for technology and his video art works reflect the impact filmmaking has had on him. Some of his works are part of the T2 terminal, Mumbai International Airport Art Project which greatly enhance one of Mumbai most significant symbols of progress and development.

Working with prolific director- producer Shekhar Kapur led to Tyagi playing a pivotal role in working on the Installation ‘Water’ at the Mumbai International Airport along with Rajeev Sethi. The giant musical instrument that signifies one can play music by touching the water flowing from the century old spouts, represents water to be a gift and every time we touch it, it echo’s back as a musical tone.

Currently, Tyagi is working on an installation for a sports academy on the outskirts of Mumbai. The academy faces a beautiful lake and the Adivasi village on the other side of the land accesses the lake to wash clothes and utensils whereby polluting the lake with detergents. His installation ‘Ghat’ will merge utility and art together and if his former projects are anything to go by, this will certainly bring the village on the thriving art scene in India.

Gyan Mudra series is basically putting down all the amazing stories that Aashish grew up on. He felt an urge to design and create in collaboration with these amazing craftsmen’s something beautiful and meaningful, thus in a small way conserve our crafts and heritage.
