Our whole Universe including human beings is made up of five elements; namely Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. In modern times, this balance has been upset too much due to our changed lifestyle & food habits. We are taking less water. Instead of water-rich foods like raw vegetables and fresh fruits, we are consuming too much fried food in which water elements has been dried up by heating, resulting in increases of fire element and earth element. By sleeping in closed rooms, living in smaller houses, traveling in closed vehicles, working in closed cubicles space element is getting reduced. As we do not spend much time in open air, the ear element is also being reduced.

The human body consists of bones and muscles (Earth element), blood (Water element), breath (Air element), heat (Fire element), and emptiness within (Space element). As in the Universe, so it is in our body- a fine balance amongst these five elements. Even a small imbalance amongst them makes us sick. But an imbalance is always occurring in our body at every moment due to a lot of factors.The food we eat, the way we think, the way we behave, the way we live our daily life, the way we react to outside factors, everything affects the balance.

There are numerous glands in our body which are producing hormones, enzymes, endorphins and secretions to regulate the working of various organs of our body. Various types of Bio-energy, Magnetic energy, Electrical, Mechanical and Chemical energies are present in our body. These energies run the body. These energies are the vital force of the body or PRAN SHAKTI. This PRAN SHAKTI is also made up of five elements. Any imbalance in these five elements weakens the Vital Force or PRAN SHAKTI.

An imbalance of Water element can lead to cold, cough, sinusitis, asthma, ascites, swellings, blood thinning or blood clotting, the problem of urination and diseases of reproductive organs. Imbalanced Earth element can cause weakness, obesity, cholesterol, weight loss or weight gain, bones or muscular diseases, etc. Imbalanced Fire element will create coldness or fever, skin diseases, increased coldness or heat in the body, loss of vital energy, acidity and diabetes and mental disorders. Imbalance of Air element can lead to nervous disorders, blood pressure problems, lung disorders, physical pains/deformities, depression, locomotor ataxia, etc. The space element imbalance would create thyroid disorders, throat problems, speech disorders, epilepsy, madness, foolishness, ear diseases, etc.

The five fingers of our hands are the depositories of the PRAN SHAKTI/VITAL FORCE. Maximum energy flows in the tips of these fingers. But these fingers represent different components of PRAN SHAKTI. The THUMB represents FIRE (AGNI), the INDEX finger represents AIR (VAYU), the MIDDLE finger represents SPACE (AKASH), the Ring finger represents EARTH (PRITHVI) while the LITTLE finger signifies WATER (JAL). Have you ever thought as to why all these five fingers are of unequal size and NOT equally sized? The middle finger is the largest finger. It represents SPACE element which is the most expansive element in this Universe as well as in our body. Wherever you go in this world, the empty space stares you in the eyes. It is Omnipresent. In our body also, there are 75000 billion cells, and there is intracellular space between each of these cells.

How do we fall sick? Sickness is the result of and is caused by IMBALANCE in the flow of energy in the body. The energy flow to various cells, tissues and organs are regulated by PITUITARY GLAND. This gland produces various hormones/chemicals to control all the other glands (regulators) of our body. Any mental, physical or nervous disorders, even love or anger or envy, jealousy, etc. affect the secretions of this glands. This gland, thus, affects the secretions of other glands. This gland, thus, affects the flow of Vital force or energy in the body.

As already mentioned, the five fingers of our hands are a storehouse of PRANIC/ Magnetic energy. The tips of our fingers contain the maximum energy. They are, indeed, five SENSORS of this energy. The five fingers are a DIVINE mechanism through which we can create and maintain a balance amongst the five elements. Any imbalance in these five elements affects the Vital Energy and makes us sick. We can restore the balance through these fingers so as to keep healthy, whatever may be the disease, be it heart disease or angina or pain anywhere in the body or stomach disease or kidney disease or diseases of reproductive systems or diabetes or hypertension or depression or even cancer, all of them can be traced to the uneven flow of Vital energy in our body and therefore all of them can be cured by restoration of free flow of energy through the manipulation of the hand’s five fingers into various postures called Mudras in the science of Yoga.

Yoga is a complete science of healing as well as for prevention of diseases. But, Yoga has so far been restricted to Asanas and Pranayam. But, it is much more. Hand Mudras are an integral part of Yoga, but, unfortunately, the healing aspect of these Mudras has not been well-published so far. Nevertheless, as we shall prove later in this book, the fact remains that we can keep ourselves healthy through these Mudras alone.

Be it allopathy, homeopathy or Ayurveda or even naturopathy, the cost of treatment is getting higher and higher (even prohibitive) without any guarantee for complete cure. Even Yoga involves the practice of Asanas and Pranayam which everybody cannot do, because of physical weakness or pain and they also need to be done under expert supervision regularly. Most of the people in the fast modern world do not have time for the practice of these Yogasans and Pranayams.

The science of Mudras provides the safest and the most convenient, easy-to-do hand Mudras, both for prevention as well as for the healing of diseases. With five fingers of our hands, we can magically affect the body’s metabolism and that too without spending a single penny or even a single extra minute. It does not cost any money at all. It is a FREE GIFT from God Almighty. Practicing of Mudras does not involve going to doctors or hospitals, does not involve any time-consuming exercises, and does not involve any equipment at all. They can be done anywhere, anytime while sitting, walking, lying, talking, watching TV. No exclusive time is required to make Mudras. In addition, they have only HEALING effects and no side effects at all.

How do Mudras Work?

Our body is a huge chemical factory. It has many glands which secrete hormones, acids, enzymes, endorphins and various other chemicals for harmonious functioning of body and mind. They generate energy, Cosmic energy or Bio-energy or Electromagnetic energy (whatever be the name), this energy flows maximum in our fingertips. The THUMB is symbolic of Sun’s energy i.e. FIRE (HEAT), INTELLECT and WISDOM. The INDEX finger symbolizes Air (MOVEMENT AND AIR CIRCULATION). The MIDDLE finger represents space & sound, the ring finger represents (STRENGTH, VITALITY, STABILITY); while the LITTLE finger symbolizes WATER and YOUTHFULNESS. When these fingers are joined individually or separately with the thumb, their power is enhanced, their bio- energy is increased to achieve optimum balance. For example, Joining the Thumb with the Index finger increases memory and intellect; joining Thumb with Ring finger increase strength and vitality; joining the Thumb with the Little finger increases youthfulness and water content in our body, while joining the Thumb with the Middle finger increases Space and sound. Conversely, when each of these fingers is folded and pressed with the thumb, it tends to restore balance by decreasing the excessive energy of the element represented by the particular finger. In both ways, balance is restored in the body between various elements.

Each finger is divided into three parts. When we touch the lower part, the corresponding element is increased. When we touch the middle part, the corresponding element is decreased. When we touch the upper part, the corresponding element is balanced. This is the basic principle of the Science of Mudras.

The fingers can be used individually or collectively or in various combinations to form a variety of Mudras. And all these you can get at NO COST whatsoever, no equipment, no visits to doctors/hospital, no ultrasounds, no CT Scans or MRIs, no tests. Just sitting in your home, office, car, bus, and airplane or watching TV, you can gain complete health through Mudras. Mudras, not only relieve disease and distress, they save lots of money over a lifetime.

Many Mudras can be formed for SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT, which is extremely useful for those engaged in personal spiritual enlightenment. In fact, the Mudras were originally conceived and developed by our ancient Rishis and sages as a tool for spiritual growth and also to keep themselves free from pain and disease.

Through Mudras, we can REGULATE the flow of various types of energies in our body and mind. While all medical therapies are REACTIVE (response to disease), MUDRA Healing is a PROACTIVE system of health like Yoga, without using any artificial props and support. God has given us the mechanism to regulate the body’s energy flows. Hand Mudras are the most powerful and potent instruments for this purpose.

Importance of Mudras

• They are switch boards of the body to regulate energy flows.

• They are windows to SPIRITUALITY.

• They balance the five elements of Fire, Air, Space, Earth, and Water.

• They develop Immunity and purify nerves.

• They energize the body and mind, by removing all impediments.

• They benefit mental, physical and spiritual levels, which no medicine can do.

• They affect all glands of the body and regulate their hormonal activity.

• They affect all the seven Chakras, and through these Chakras, they affect body, mind and soul magically.

• That is why all Indian saints and rishis can be seen in Mudras. Even Lord Krishna formed the Gyan Mudra while giving discourses to Arjuna through Bhagwat Gita.

Guidelines for Using Mudras

• While mudras can be performed in any pose, sitting or standing or walking, talking, watching TV, traveling etc, some Mudras give better results in specified pose.

• The normal duration of every Mudra is at least 45 minutes a day or 15 minutes each time thrice a day unless otherwise stated. However, doing a mudra continuously for 45 minutes is better.

• Mudras should preferably be done with both hands simultaneously, though one-handed Mudra can also be made but its effect will be in half only. Right-hand mudra affects left the side of the body and vice versa.

• For better and quicker results, Mudras may be performed with Deep breathing.

• Some Mudras work instantaneously, as in colic, earache, angina, etc but in chronic cases, it requires long and continuous sustained practice, at least for a month to 45 days to achieve desired results.

• While in pain, do only Vayu Mudra, Shoonya, Linga or ApaanVayu Mudra.

• Mudras can be used along with other therapies.

• Two Mudras can be done simultaneously, one by left and the other by the right hand, but mutually antagonistic Mudras cannot be done in this way. For example, one cannot do Prithvi Mudra by one hand (as it increases weight) and Surya Mudra (as it decreases weight) on the other hand, i.e. they have opposite effects.

• When Mudras are practiced along with suitable exercise, yogasans and pranayama and due care is also taken of the food intake, they have a wonderful effect. For example, if you do SURYA Mudra to reduce weight, you obviously have to cut down on your fat and sugar consumption for quicker results.

• Doing ANULOM VILOM PRANAYAM twice a day daily for fifteen minutes, morning and evening greatly enhance the effect of Mudras. In fact, AnulomVilom and mudras can be done simultaneously also. Keep the left hand in required Mudra while doing AnulomVilom. Oshodhara has devised Suprabhat Meditation, making use of the essential Mudras and Pranayama.
