Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Arun Jaitley, was honoured by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and the Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) with the Prof (Justice) A B Rohtagi Jurist Award- 2016 in recognition of his distinguished services to the development of legal education, legal profession and constitutional governance in India. ​New Delhi: Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Mr. Arun Jaitley, was honoured by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and the Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy Training (MILAT) with the Prof (Justice) A B Rohtagi Jurist Award- 2016 in recognition of his distinguished services to the development of legal education, legal profession and constitutional governance in India. He was conferred with the award in the presence of eminent lawyers and academicians.
The award ceremony was preceded by a half day long symposium on ‘Trade in Legal Services’ which was presided by the Hon’ble Justice Mr. Arjun Sikri Judge of Hon’ble Supreme Court. Some of the important issues discussed during the symposium included emphasis on the increase trade in legal services, entry of foreign law firms to India, rules for foreign legal consultants, etc.
Mr. Lalit Bhasin, President, SILF in his welcome address stated, “The role played by eminent law teachers and schools in promoting quality legal education in the country has ensured that India today is a justice driven society with a strong legal backbone. Legal education works not only as an instrument of social control but also as instrument of social change. Institutes of legal excellence are creating a generation of lawyers and legal professionals who are not only committed to upholding our Constitutional principles and enforcing our Fundamental Rights but also socially engineer the country in its endeavour to achieve new heights.”
The other awardees for the evening included, Prof. N.R. Madhava Menon Best Law Teacher Award 2016 was presented to Prof. (Dr.) Bhavani Prasad Panda in recognition of his distinguished services to legal education and legal profession. The Institutional Excellence Award 2016 was given to College of Law and Governance, Mody University of Science and Technology, Lakshmangarh, Rajasthan in recognition of academic performance, inspiring leadership and socially purposeful empowerment of Women through quality higher education. The Legal Education Innovation Award 2016 was presented to Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer in recognition of innovation and leadership in development of Increasing the Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA) and promoting legal careers among the under-privileged.
These awards were presented by Hon. Justice Chelameswar of the Supreme Court of India. Justice Chelameswar, congratulated SILF and MILAT for recognising the role of the law teachers and law schools in producing the best legal talent in the country.
In addition to the above, Best Law Student of the Year Award 2016 (female category) was presented to Ms. Mounica Kasturi of Symbiosis International University Law School, Pune. In the male category the Best Law Student of the Year Award 2016 was presented to Mukul Krishna Vyas of National Law University, Jodhpur.
