A team of doctors led by Dr. Abdul Ansari, Director, Critical Care Services, Critical Care, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital (NSSH) saved the life of Ms. ZaranaPatani (32), a pregnant lady who was admitted to the hospital with multiple high risk medical issues. The team comprised Dr M.G.Pillai, Senior Interventional Cardiologist (NSSH), Dr SushilGadekar, Chief Intensivist (NSSH), Dr Anup Chaudhury, Nephrologist (NSSH) and Dr Fatema Merchant, (NSSH).

“The patient was diagnosed with pulmonary edema (collection of excess fluids in lungs) which made breathing difficult and she was immediately put on ventilator. Prior to performing a Caesarean surgery on her, she was also suffering from peripartum cardiomyopathy (heart failure during pregnancy) and suspected pulmonary embolism. She was also detected with deep vein thrombosis, characterized by blood clot in her right leg," stated Dr. Ansari, highlighting the complications in the case.

The administration of blood thinners in the post-surgery phase to dissolve the clot in her right leg was a difficult task owing to post-partum hemorrhage (post-delivery bleeding). Her kidneys had become dysfunctional following which she was put on dialysis.

Her treatment regimen included multiple blood transfusions and administration of slow low efficiency dialysis (SLED). It took four weeks for her heart functions to recover fully. Both mother and child are normal and doing fine.
