Severed finger of RPF serviceman reattached at NSSH through finger revascularization surgery

Railway Protection Force (RPF) serviceman BhanuPratap Singh (47) got his finger reattached at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital after it was severed following a ring avulsion injury while he was alighting from a train at a suburban station.

“While getting down from a train, my finger got caught in the train handle in the crowd rush. My finger was mutilated along with the skin. After getting first aid administered, I was advised to go to Nanavati Hospital where the finger was reattached and am not experiencing any problem now with its functioning,” stated BhanuPratap Singh while recounting his ordeal.

“When the patient was brought in, his middle finger had been ripped off. Through a finger revascularization surgery wherein we also resuscitated the blood vessels in his finger, we salvaged it and restored its movement successfully. Any further delay and the finger could have become gangrenous and saving it could have become a tedious affair,” stated Dr Vibhakar, cosmetic surgeon, NSSH.

A ring avulsion injury occurs when a ring worn by an individual is entangled in an object during a fall or jump, especially in a fast-moving motion. The damage from the sudden tug of the ring can range from a bruise to pulling of the skin. In severe cases, it can cause traumatic amputation of the finger.

BhanuPratap Singh has fully recovered from the trauma and has returned to his normal life.
