The earbud headphones, used in today’s MP3 players are even more likely to cause hearing loss than the earlier muff type earphones.On an average, the smaller the headphones are the higher their output levels at any given volume control setting.

Tiny earphones inserted into the ears are not as efficient at blocking outside sounds as the cushioned headsets, in which the users tend to crank up the volume to compensate.A quarter of MP3 player users between 18 and 54 years of age listen at volumes sufficient to cause hearing damage.
