Jayalalithaa\'s Killer Idea to Woo Voters—Idly Sambar at Re 1. Chennai is synonymous with idly sambar. Then why not use it to garner a few extra votes? This mantra seems to be playing on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa\'s mind. Move over free laptops and TVs, Jaya has realised the way to a voter\'s heart is through his stomach.
Chennai is synonymous with idly sambar. Then why not use it to garner a few extra votes? This mantra seems to be playing on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's mind. Move over free laptops and TVs, Jaya has realised the way to a voter's heart is through his stomach. The wise politician that she is has managed to build her vote bank using this strategy.
Welcome to Amma's Kitchen, where each idly will cost you a just Re 1. Wondering how this is possible in times when the prices of essential commodities are rising by the day? Well, that is exactly what the Tamil Nadu CM also thought. Looks like Jaya finally realised that fulfilling the basic need of people is more important than providing them with gadgets.
Thousands of people from all walks of life halt at one of the 200 budget kitchens set up across Chennai. Fluffy idlies dipped in piping hot yum sambar await you. There are just three items on the menu which means it makes your choice easier. The other two food items on the menu that sell like hot cakes are sambar rice which is sold at Rs 5 per plate and curd rice priced at Rs 3 per plate.
Although this idea was targeted at the labour class, even techies and localities throng the place to appease their hunger pangs. About 2 lakh idlies are sold every day. If there's floating population and the prices so low, then how clean or tasty can the food be? Well, worry not for the place is being maintained by women from the self-help groups. The canteen is not just hygenic but the food too is tasty.
The 'puratchi thalaivi' (revolutionary leader) as Jaya is rightly called has initiated a food revolution this time and how! This is Jaya's perfect mantra to help poor fight the price rise and the idea and clicked. The response has been overwhelming and prompted the state to set up more such canteens to cater to the needs of a common man. Besides, the scheme also provides employment opportunities to hundreds of women who get paid Rs 300 a day.
With an aim to woo voters, Jaya has made the best move. Can DMK chief M Karunanidhi counter this with another killer idea? Let's wait and watch.
