Final Phase Of Polling In Chhattisgarh Today. The first phase of polling on November 11 covered the Naxal- affected Bastar and Rajnandgaon, the constituency of chief minister Dr Raman Singh.

Though the noisy campaign has ended in Chhattisgarh the silence is deafening for the parties involved in the assembly elections. Polling takes place for the second and final phase on Tuesday for 72 of the 90 remaining seats.

The first phase of polling on November 11 covered the Naxal- affected Bastar and Rajnandgaon, the constituency of chief minister Dr Raman Singh.

Just in its teens as a state Chhattisgarh has seen five elections (to assembly and parliament) and all that goes with it. Both the main opposition party Congress and the public appear to be caught between the Maoists and Namoistsin the state where the BJP is fully entrenched for past ten years.
Given the violent background of the region the state administration can heave a sigh of relief as 68 per cent voters defied the Maoists’ threats and only stray incidents of violence were witnessed in the first phaseof polling. Besides the chief minister three ministers are among 143 candidates contesting from 12 constituencies in Bastar division and six of Rajnandgaon district in the phase.
Pollsters believe the high percentage of polling can cut either way. The Congress’ optimism flows from the martyrdom of its leaders in the most violent political attack that shook the area six months ago in this region.
