New Delhi: With pressure mounting from Seemandhra BJP leaders and in a bid to reach out to the TDP, with which the party is mulling an alliance, BJP president Rajnath Singh on Friday raised the demand for the formation of Telangana, even while ensuring full justice to the people of Seemandhra region.
When told that the agitation in the Seemandhra is only for keeping Andhra Pradesh united, Rajnath Singh sidestepped the issue, saying his party is for the creation of Telangana. With eye on upcoming elections and possible electoral tie-ups, the BJP president took care to do a balancing act by declaring that along with Telangana, the party is also concerned about addressing the concerns of the people of Seemandhra region.
Singh said, “The Congress is not serious about addressing the concerns of the people of Seemandhra. The BJP will exert pressure on the Congress to render full justice to the people of Seemandgra region.” The BJP is aware that after the formation of Telangana, it has to contend with Seemandhra region, where BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will be campaigning. It is against this backdrop that the BJP, which never raised the issue of Seemandhra in the past, is suddenly talking of it.
For his part, Rajnath Singh did not spell out his party’s position on issues like Union Territory status to Hyderabad or other contentious issues, but confined himself to saying his party wants all concerns of Seemandhra region to be addressed.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was openly opposing the Congress decision on Telangana, even while the Telangana Bill was being brought by the party.
No effort had been made by the Congress to evolve a consensus even within the ruling party, he said.
The BJP president insisted that the demand for the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the creation of Telangana was to bring good governance to both the regions. The BJP had no political motive in seeking the creation of Telangana, he said. But the Congress had miserably failed and made a mess of the entire issue.
The BJP-led NDA created the three States of Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, it managed to resolve all issues before carving out the new States. The Congress, on the other hand, took the decision on Telangana and it is only after the decision that the Congress has started doing its homework, he said.
It should have been the other way round, of doing the homework first before announcing the decision on creating Telangana.
