New Delhi: Congress backed Union Minister Shashi Tharoor, after Magisterial Inquiry recommended further probe by the Delhi Police, saying poisoning has been confirmed, even as NCP demanded that Shashi Tharoor must step down.
NCP Spokesman D P Tripathi said, “We are all with Shashi Tharoor at this hour of grief, but I must say the charges are very serious and the Minister should dissociate from his Ministerial responsibility.” Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Vasant Vihar in the Capital said the autoposy report indicated Sunanda Pushkar died of poisoning. The SDM asked the Delhi Police to investigate whether the death was the result of suicide or homicide.
AICC Spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Shashi Tharoor is a responsible Minister of the Government. Nobody is accusing him of anything, not even his critics and civil society. Why should he resign?”
Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who called on Shashi Tharoor soon after the tragedy, has now appointed Shashi Tharoor as the AICC Spokesman. The Congress has rejected any suggestions of foul play. It was agreed that Sunanda Pushkar had died of drug overdose. Sources in the AIIMS said traces of chemicals found in her body indicated consumption of some anti-depressant and that there were nearly a dozen injuries on the body. Journalists, who spoke to Sunanda Pushkar before her untimely and unfortunate death, found her to be very depressed, following the row over the relationship between her husband and Pakistani journalist, Mehar Tarar.
Sunanda Puhskar’s son Shiv Menon has himself give a clean-chit to Shashi Tharoor. Shiv Menon said, “Watching the news has devasted me to a degree that I feel I must speak out. What the media reports have been alleging and implying in regard to my mother’s death is not just untrue, it is outrageous. Anyone who knew my mother would simply know that she was too strong to commit suicide. I also do not believe that Shashi was capable of physically harming her, let alone the speculation that he could have taken her life.”
“They were very much in love, despite occasional differences, which they always overcame. It was an unfortunate combination of media stress, tensions and a wrong mix of different medication. Her death was peaceful, she passed in her sleep. Please let her soul rest. I think there has been enough attention drawn towards her life – let her at least rest in her passing.”
