Why Rahul did not speak on corruption, asks Jaitley

New Delhi: The BJP has set its sights on securing 272+ seats in the Lok Sabha elections and is not worried about its political alliances.

Talking about the party's alliance with the TDP, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj stated on Saturday that Chandrababu Naidu was informed by BJP President Rajnath Singh that they were committed to the cause of Telangana and would vote in its favour in Parliament. Besides, she said that they were at present only focused on increasing their own political tally in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Alliance or no alliance, the party cannot change its stand on Telangana, was the message to the TDP leader. The party's credibility hinged on honouring its commitment.

Sushma Swaraj said that there was no question ever of the BJP voting against Telangana. All along they had been saying that they wanted the separate State of Telangana but also wanted due justice for the Seemandhra state." According to Sushma, it was due to the lack of consensus in the Congress that there was chaos in Parliament as never before. She said during the Vajpayee government, three states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand were formed but there was no bloodshed.

At the Joint press conference, Leaders of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley, held the UPA government responsible for undermining the democratic institutions like the CVC, CAG, PAC and CBI and for paralyzing the functioning of Parliament. Sushma Swaraj said, "The last three sessions were wasted on Telangana by the Congress.

As for not cooperating in passing the anti-graft bills of the UPA government, Arun Jaitley termed AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi as a "very late entrant into the anti-corruption crusader bandwagon." Sushma Swaraj went on to add that the Congress wanted to make anti-corruption their own issue. Rahul Gandhi, she said, was not a genuine crusader.

Arun Jaitley wondered as to why Rahul Gandhi did not speak on the scams like CWG, Adarsh, VVIP Augusta Westland, Cash-for-Votes and 2G scam. "He never spoke in Parliament against the scams", charged Jaitley. Terming the UPA-II as "wasted opportunity" for the Congress, Jaitley said that it also suffered from the "leadership vacuum. Prime MinisterManmohan Singh did not have the last word." Besides, the government suffered from policy paralysis, leading to economic crisis in the country. Price-hike, inflation, institutional decline, inept handling of foreign policy was other failures of the UPA government. He was of the view that due to all these reasons, the Congress leadership was itself not sure of coming back to power. "With cynicism and disappointment, government has closed its work," remarked Jaitley.
