Congress Pins Hope on Post-Poll Tie-Ups. Prepared to be ditched by the like-minded parties like the TRS, RJD and the DMK, whose leader M Karunanidhi is showing signs of cosying up to the BJP, the Congress is hopeful that these parties would ultimately join hands with it in the post-poll scenario.
- If the TRS does not merge, it will come to us at a later stage, says a Cong leader
- Congress aware that both the RJD, JD(U) have no choice but to align with it
New Delhi: Prepared to be ditched by the like-minded parties like the TRS, RJD and the DMK, whose leader M Karunanidhi is showing signs of cosying up to the BJP, the Congress is hopeful that these parties would ultimately join hands with it in the post-poll scenario.
Sources in the Congress stated that despite its firm ‘No’ to the merger proposal, it is confident that the TRS had no other option but to tie-up with the Congress as both these parties were keen for the formation of separate state of Telangana. "If the TRS does not merge with the Congress and goes it alone, ahead of the elections, it will come to us at the later stage," stated a Congress leader, keeping his fingers crossed. The Congress is confident that there will be only two players in the Telangana region, the Congress and the TRS, which will assist each other to form the government in the State and at the Centre, depending on the seats they secure in the Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections.
Aware that the TRS cannot tie-up with the TDP, which is likely to go with the BJP, the Congress leaders are of the view that the TRS has no option but to enter into an arrangement with the Congress, if not pre-poll, at least post-poll.
Similarly in Bihar, the Congress, while warming-up towards the JD(U), has kept its options open with the RJD, as well. The Congress is aware that both the RJD and the JD(U) have no choice but to align with them, given the secular versus communal divide in the State. The Congress, so far, has not spoken in favour of granting Special Category Status to Bihar, even though Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been asking for it for a long time. On Monday, BJP leader Arun Jaitley, too, asked for the same, blaming the UPA government for holding back the decision in order to bargain withNitish Kumar.
When asked about the demand for giving Special Category Status to Bihar, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi evaded a direct reply saying that it was a "technical and not political" issue. Ironically, Seemandhra was given the Special Category Status, only keeping an eyeon the electoral dividends.
The Congress is playing a double-game in Bihar. Knowing fully well that RJD Chief Lalu Yadav is desperate to stitch-up an alliance with the Congress, it has pitched its claims high. Given the political equation in the state, the Congress is in no hurry to sew-up an alliance with RJD, lest it closes all options to join hands with the JD(U) in the pre-poll scenario.
In the South, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi has profusely praised BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, hinting at his tilt towards the BJP. The Congress, however, is not disappointed as the DMK, anyway, is a spent force in the State and has no choice but to enter into an alliance with them. The DMK cannot go with the Third Front as the AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa has joined hands with them.
The BJP, on the other hand, would prefer waiting for the poll results, hoping to clinch an alliance with AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, who is predicted to sweep the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.
