A day after Congress president Sonia Gandhi campaigned in the Lakhimpur district for sitting MP and Union minister Ranee Narah, and attacked BJP over its promises, it was the turn of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate to hammer the congress led UPA government.

On Sunday, at an election rally in Lakhimpur, Gandhi had attacked the BJP for talking "big" and believing in the "politics of hate”. Training her guns at BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Gandhi had warned the people against the “politics of hatred” propagated by the opposition party and asked them not to be swayed by “false promises” and big talk.

Attacking UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Modi said that in 2009 the Congress had promised reducing prices within 100 days of coming to power.

“Madam Sonia says Congress fulfils its promises but what happened to its promise of reducing prices in 100 days?" asked the BJP’s PM candidate.

Modi also hit out at Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and said that the latter has the time to visit Sonia 10 times in New Delhi, but doesn’t have the time to meet people in his own state who are affected, and also families of those people who have been killed.

In the rally, Modi also spoke about the ill treatment meted out to people from the North East region in different parts of the country, and questioned the Congress leadership why it is was not doing anything for this.

Later, at another rally in Assam's Biswanath Chariali, Modi renewed his attacks on the Congress party as well as Sonia Gandhi.

"I don't think there will be any state in the country where Congress will get seats in double digits," Modi told the gathering.

The Gujarat chief minister raked up the Italian marines issue and accused the Congress-led government at the Centre of letting them go scot-free.

"If SC had not pulled up the Italian embassy, they would have never returned." Modi said.

"Madam Sonia ji, since you have challenged our patriotism, we want to know in which jail are the two Italian marines being kept?" he asked.

"Please don't question patriotism of people. We don't need certificates from you," Modi said.

Meanwhile BJP President of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, who is contesting from the Lakhimpur seat said that this time Congress will have a tough time in retaining its seats, as the people of the country have realized how the Congress party has taken them for a ride for some many years.

“In Assam we are confident of a good performance, much better than 2009 where we won 4 out of the 14 seats,” said Sonowal.
