The Autonomous District, comprising of the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts, Karimganj and Silchar – the last two being in the Barak Valley, are the 3 constituencies which will go for polls today.

An AK 56 rifle, two bullets of AK 56, four grenades, 1 kg RDX, 22 gelatin sticks and four detonators were recovered from the Kebalo village in the district yesterday. However police when contacted said that they are yet to ascertain to which militant outfit the seized arms and ammunition belong.

The Assam home department said that the police have been asked to be on high alert.
GD Tripathi, commissioner and secretary to the Assam government of the home department, said that directions had been issued to the district administrations and police to be very strong against illegal arms.
“Directions have been issued for 100 percent accounting of all the licensed arms also,” said Tripathi.
Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta said that the police is fully prepared to thwart any violence.
Mahanta said additional forces have been deployed in the district to thwart any attempt by the militants to create disturbances during the polls. In addition to the deployment of forces at the polling stations, a massive operation has been launched against the militants to keep them on the run.
The SP said adequate security has been provided to all the candidates. The polling parties also have been given security cover so that the militants cannot target them. The vulnerable polling stations have been identified and additional forces have been deployed.
Earlier, the Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), a militant outfit in the district had called for a bandh, but had withdrawn it yesterday evening, claiming it has been done in the greater interest of the people in the district.
In the other two constituencies also the administration are not taking things lightly.
In Karimganj district, around 3,868 polling personnel have been engaged in poll operations.
Cachar district Superintendent of Police Diganta Borah said SSB, ITBP, RPF, CRPF, Assam Police battalion, Home Guard, women police and VDF personnel have been engaged in dealing with security.
