Two low intensity bomb blasts took place in two coaches of the Bangalore-Guwahati train on Thursday at 7:45 AM, barely 10 minutes after it entered platform number 9 of the Chennai Central railway station, killing one and injuring eleven.

Southern Railway General Manager, Rakesh Mishra told reporters that the blasts took place at in S-4 and S-5 (sleeper coaches) after the train arrived at the platform. Mishra confirms eleven injured victims and one casualty, saying that the bomb was under the seat of the deceased.

Tamil Nadu DGP, K Ramanujam, who was at the blasts-site, says, "It is not a major blast. It is suspected that Chennai could not have been target of those who were behind the blast because the train was running late. Some other location could have been the target." Had the train been on time, it would have been near Nellore, Andhra Pradesh where the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, is scheduled to address a rally. Ramanujam adds that a Special Investigation Team would probe the twin bomb blasts.

According to reports, police have found a suspect hiding in a compartment of the train. He was questioned in police custody but no formal statement was released.

Another suspect is Zaheer Hussain, an agent of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence who is a Sri Lankan national reporting to the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo. He was arrested the day before the blasts. During interrogation, Hussain said he worked as a shoe exporter and visited Chennai several times to recruit and also plan blasts in Tamil Nadu. While no link has been established between Hussain's arrest and the blasts, sources said police are probing any suspected linkage. The police are expected to revisit his interrogation.

Railway Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Let’s not jump to conclusions, it will take approximately 1 week to make the analysis and for the investigation. … [The] investigation is going on. Railway and state police are working together.”

Inspector General of Police (Railways) Sheema Agarwal told IANS that the injured have been admitted to a government hospital. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the kin of the deceased, Rs 25,000 for those who are critically injured, and Rs 5,000 for the others who received minor injuries.
