A curfew was imposed in some parts of the Srinagar city to maintain law and order on Thursday, following the killing of a young man, Bashir Ahmad Bhat, when a security detail opened fire moments after Lok Sabha polls for the Srinagar constituency ended on Wednesday evening. The security men were escorting election officials at the end of the day's polling in the city when some stone pelters attacked them, police said.
The forces reportedly opened fire at the group of stone pelters who pelted stones when the polling party was returning from Nawa Kadal. Sources said as the voting ended in the Nawa Kadal groups of youth assembled at the main square and hurled stones at the retreating troopers. "There were about 150 boys and they were attacking a security vehicle. Few had climbed on it when the troopers fired," a local said.
The forces accompanying the staff opened fire at the stone pelters. "The protesters pelted stones wounding paramilitary personnel identified as Sandeep Kumar of 131 Bn.. Subsequently, the forces opened fire besides resorting to pellet-firing. The injured persons were identified as Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Nazir Ahmad Kaloo and Haleema Bano," GNS reported.
"The miscreants snatched the weapon of a security force personnel. In the ensuing scuffle, two persons identified as Bashir Ahmad Bhat and Nazir Ahmed Kaloo got injured. Bashir Ahmad later on succumbed to his injuries … Nazir Ahmed Kaloo got injured in [his] arm and is out of danger," a statement issued by J&K police on Wednesday evening said.
The death of Bashir Ahmad Bhat sparked major protests – hundreds participated in the last rites of the youth who was buried in the night amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans in Martyrs Graveyard of Srinagar. At least three more persons were injured in the clashes that erupted in other localities of old city after the news of youth’s killing spread.
Pro-Pakistan Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani and moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Omar Farooq had called for a shutdown today to protest against the killing. While Srinagar remained shut, the strike call evoked partial response from other parts of the Valley. Geelani has called for protests after Friday prayers too.
All mainstream parties and their leaders --- including chief minister Omar Abdullah, Union minister Farooq Abdullah and PDP's Mehbooba Mufti --- condemned the killing of the youth in security forces' firing.
