Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s daughter wanted her father to leave Congress after Rahul Gandhi tore up the Cabinet’s decision to allow convicted persons to contest in elections, at a press conference in Delhi. He described the decision as “complete nonsense”.

The author of the book “The Accidental Prime Minister”, Sanjaya Baru who was in Mumbai for the launch of his book, said when the UPA came back to power in 2009, he too, had on several occasions advised Singh to resign. “I came on television and said he should quit,” he says, “And I got an SMS from his daughter, ‘I agree with you’.”

Saying that Singh believed the 2009 Lok Sabha victory was his, Baru commented on the day (June 2nd 2009) when the UPA won saying, “I had never seen Singh sit cross-legged. But that day when I went to meet him, he was sitting cross-legged talking about the victory. But no one credited him as the author of that victory. My friend Prithviraj Chavan, whom Singh brought in as minister of state (PMO), told a news channel the credit went to Rahul Gandhi.”

Baru declined to reveal which of the two daughters made this demand, adding that his book was an analysis of a very unique experiment in Indian politics.
