A sub-inspector from Uttar Pradesh has submitted his resignation via a public WhatsApp group, on a helpline number set up by the Kanpur Zone Inspector General (IG) to address complaints filed by the public.

Alleging harassment and insult by a Circle Officer (CO), Sub-Inspector Vinod Kumar, who was posted at Rasulabad police station in Kanpur Dehat district, sent in his resignation on Tuesday, said Kanpur Zone IG Ashutosh Pandey.

Kumar alleged that Ramesh Chandra Vidyarthi, the CO of Rasulabad area, had misbehaved with him and used foul language, and he had a recording of the conversation. The police official also claimed that due to the incident, he was transferred to the Jhansi range.

“On Tehsil Divas, a woman had approached senior officials with a complaint. She then met SI Vinod Kumar at the police station, but he did not register a FIR of the complaint. The woman later approached the CO, who called up Kumar and took him to task for not adhering to instructions by senior officials. Kumar recorded the conversation and alleged that the CO had misbehaved with him. He also posted his resignation on a WhatsApp group, addressed to me, and said the CO had misbehaved with him,” said Ashutosh Pandey, IG of Kanpur Zone. Pandey has directed Kanpur Dehat’s SP to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within 24 hours.
