Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday filed nomination papers to contest the by-election from R K Nagar assembly constituency here on June 27.

Jayalalithaa, sworn in as chief minister two weeks ago, has to get elected to the state assembly within six months of taking office.

She was disqualified as a legislator in September 2014 when a Bengaluru court convicted her in a corruption case. Sent to jail for three weeks, she had to resign as chief minister.

Days before she was sworn in, P Vetrivel, the AIADMK legislator from R K Nagar, resigned from the assembly to facilitate her election.

Meanwhile, CPI has fielded its senior state leader C Mahendran as its candidate for the bypoll.

Mahendran's candidature was decided at a meeting of the party's State Committee on Friday attended by its National Secretary D Raja and Tamil Nadu secretary R Mutharasan.

Raja, who announced Mahendran's candidature, said that the party, with the support of CPI(M), was contesting the elections to "uphold parliamentary democracy" even as others including DMK and PMK had decided to boycott it.

"The Communist parties contesting this election will have a big impact in Tamil Nadu politics, he said.
