Delhi all set for first international yoga day

New Delhi: Seeking to promote the International Yoga Day mid-air, state-run carrier Air India will on June 21 show a film on yoga across its flights, along with special in-flight announcement. Starting Sunday, the airline will hold the celebrations mid-air for the entire week, besides, conducting specific yoga and meditation courses during the period to mark the global event.

The government stood firm on its decision to not include 'surya namaskar' and 'om' chanting in the set of 'asanas' to be performed during the official celebrations to mark the International Yoga Day.

"The controversy has ended. 'Surya namaskar' is not part of the protocol and chanting of 'om' is not compulsory, wherein people can chant in the name of the god they wish," Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik said. Several Muslim groups had expressed reservations against offering 'surya namaskar' and reciting Sanskrit 'slokas' during the yoga 'asanas' to be performed during the June 21 event.

Massive security arrangements have been made at Rajpath and surrounding areas in the heart of the national capital for the first International Yoga Day on June 21.

Over 40,000 people, including ministers, political leaders and government officials, are expected to participate in the event scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.

Vice-Chancellor

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah said yoga is deeply ingrained in the university's culture and that a number of his predecessors encouraged its practice on the campus.

"I have been practicing yoga for the past 40 years and it has helped me tremendously. The practice of yoga is deeply ingrained in AMU culture and a number of former VCs practiced it and also encouraged it on the campus," Mr Shah said.

He, however, said that no one should be pressurised to practice this "ancient form" of exercise.

"It will be counterproductive if pressure is put on any section to practise this form of exercise. Yoga must be de-linked from religion to enhance its mass appeal," he said.

"We should treat it as an ancient form of mental and physical exercises without any religious overtones. Yoga is a national treasure and we should all be proud of it," he added.

Haridwar siblings master 150 Yoga 'asanas'

Haridwar:  Two minor siblings from Haridwar have not only mastered around 150 'asanas' but are also quite at ease in demonstrating their expertise in Yoga.

The ancient exercise regimen - believed to be at least 5,000 years old - is practised through different 'asanas' (postures) and breathing exercises. Rohit and Shambhavi, students of Class 6 and 8 at Gayatri Vidhyapeeth, Shantikunj, also spare some time daily to teach Yoga to younger children.

Rohit is adept in 'Shirpeedhasan', 'Gudh Garbhasan', 'Hastbuddh Shirpadasan' and nearly 150 more postures. Elder sister Shambhavi is adept in performing more difficult 'asanas' like 'Hanumanasan', 'Viprit Shalbhasan' and 'Mayurasan' etc.
