Sushma Lalit Modi Row: Raje May Have To Resign. New Delhi: Asserting that the BJP is not embarrassed by Sushma Swaraj helping Lalit Modi, Union Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda hit back at the Congress saying it was the previous UPA government that allowed the former IPL chief to "run away" from the country. "As far as Sushma Swaraj is concerned, the party is not embarrassed. Doing something for a person who is suffering from cancer (Modi's wife) is not an issue to be discussed," he said.

On the political firestorm over Vasundhara Raje, who allegedly backed Modi's immigration plea and face trouble over reports that the former IPL chief had invested Rs 11.63 crore in a firm owned by her son Dushyant Singh in 2008, Gowda said the party would "certainly" look into the matter.

Raje has neither sought an appointment with BJP chief Amit Shah nor has she been denied a meeting, her office said amid claims that the party leadership had distanced itself in the wake of allegations against her in the Lalit Modi scandal.

Raje may have to fend for herself in a scandal. A top source said that if the politician did offer a secret statement backing Modi's appeal for immigration to the UK, she could be guilty of an offense that mandates her resignation. Modi is wanted in several cases of corruption, money-laundering and tax evasion in India. He left India for London in 2010, beleaguered by a series of allegations of financial wrongdoing linked to the multi-million Indian Premier League (IPL) that he created.

Lalit Modi claimed that in 2011, Vasundhara Raje, who he describes as a close family friend, provided a document in court in support of his appeal for UK citizenship. Modi says that the document had a confidentiality clause to protect Raje. His revelation about her alleged backing are seen as the result of a falling out a few years ago.
