New Delhi: An earthquake with magnitude 6 on Richter’s scale hit New Delhi on Monday afternoon. People were seen rushing out of buildings in Delhi. Tremors were also felt in Kashmir valley and other parts of north India. There were no reports of any damage or casualties. Panic-stricken people ran out of homes and offices as buildings swayed in Kashmir.


A 5.9-magnitude earthquake was also felt in Afghanistan, the US Geological Survey said. It was felt strongly in Kabul, some 290 km from the epicentre where people rushed out to the streets in alarm. The epicenter of the magnitude 6 quake was 88 km (54.68 miles) from Feyzabad in Afghanistan,


The quake struck 224 km deep beneath the Hindu Kush Mountains and close to the Wakhan Corridor, the narrow strip of far northeastern Afghanistan that lies between Tajikistan and Pakistan. Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.


In Pakistan the quake was felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest and the central province of Punjab, as well as the capital Islamabad.
