MM Kalburgia, reputed scholar and also the former vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi, was shot dead at his own residence on Sunday morning.


Kalburgi is an educationist, scholar and veteran researcher of Kannada literature known for his controversial writings was awarded a National Sahithya Academy award for Marga 4 in 2006, a collection of hundreds of his research articles.


He was killed on the early hours of Sunday (around 8:40 A.M) by unidentified persons. According to sources, the assailants came on a motorbike, his wife opened the door and the unidentified persons introduced themselves as the students and entered the house. This incident happened when his wife went to the kitchen to get coffee to the assailants.


After some time, she heard loud noises from the room and when she came to know what happened, Kalburgi was bleeding. With the help of the neighbours they took him to the hospital. There are different talks about his death mystery, most people feel that this was done by a group of people who doesn’t digest his views on caste and communalism.
