Guwahati: Flood situation in Assam turned grim on Friday claimed five more lives and affecting over 1.5 million people in 21 districts. The death toll rose to 36 after five people died on Friday in the present flood in the state.


Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its report that, two persons died each in Dibrugarh and Goalpara and one in Morigaon district. Following the incessant rains in past few days across the state, the water levels of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries have risen and flood waters submerged more areas.


According to ASDMA reports, 15,88,414 people of 2080 villages under 81 revenue circles in 21 districts are affected till Friday. 2,34,578 persons affected alone in Barpeta district following 2,29,469 in Darrang, 1,64,466 in Morigaon, 1,25,314 in Nalbari, 1,18,415 in Dibrugarh, 1,01,784 in Dhubri, 95,493 in Sonitpur district.


Flood waters inundated 1,72,308 hectors crop area in the affected districts. On other hand, 2,06,679 people took shelter in 320 relief camps which set up by district administration. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday took stock the flood situation in badly hit Jorhat and Dibrugarh district. The Assam CM had ordered to the officials to take necessary measures for relief and to tackle the flood situation.
