Nahan: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Saturday inaugurated the week-long International Renuka fair in Sirmaur district.

On the occasion, the chief minister paid obeisance to the main deity Lord Parshuram and participated in a procession that carries the idols of Lord Parshuram and his mother Goddess Renuka in a palanquin.

Stating that people of the state were recognised for their rich traditional customs and culture, Singh said: "Fairs and festivals are inseparable part of the lives of the people of the state."

He said it was the duty of every citizen to preserve and maintain the age-old temples.

Earlier, the chief minister was given a rousing reception with beating of drums and blowing of trumpets by people.

He inaugurated an exhibition set up by different government departments, showcasing the development of the state. He also laid the foundation stone of Dr Prem Singh Memorial Stadium near Sangrah.

The Renuka fair marks the union of Lord Parshuram with his mother Renuka once in a year on the eve of 'Dashmi'. The devotees also take a holy dip in the Renuka Lake on 'Prabodhini Ekadashi' (falling on Sunday).
