Kalaburagi: Migration of people en masse due to severe drought conditions is haunting the districts of Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Though the government is implementing various programmes to ensure employment and avoid migration, the rural populace does not seem to be attracted by them.

People from rural areas are migrating to metro and small cities in search of employment to support their families. Low salary, delayed payment and non availability of water in rural areas are major reasons of migration.

The phenomena in Raichur, Ballari, Koppal, Vijaypur and Yadgiri districts of Hyderabad-Karnataka are similar. According to the district administration, there are 1,269 villages in Kalaburagi district of which as many as 205 villages are facing water crisis and out of 205 villages in Aland taluka alone, 121 are suffering from acute water shortage.

Out of 884 villages in Raichur district, 186 villages are facing water problem, due to which Aroli in Manvi taluka, 80 percent households have been vacated.

In Yadagiri district, reports of animal deaths are frequent due to emptied tanks, rivers and canals. A total f 223 villages in the district are facing shortage of water. People from Bidar are migrating to Hyderabad while people from Yadagiri and Kalaburagi districts are moving towards Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai.

In Aland taluka, district administration is providing water through tankers on weekend. People from rural areas have to go for several kilometers to get water. People in some villages are reportedly taking bath only on weekends. In Melakunda village, people are forced to take bath on weekend due to non availability of water.

The Central government is providing 150 days work Under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to create employment in rural areas. But, there is still questions hovering around the scheme.

District administration is taking measures to mitigate the woes in villages which have been facing acute water shortage. Priority has been accorded to digging new bore-wells, hydro-fracturing, repairing of pumps, motors and energisation of bore-wells, said Kalaburagi ZP CEO Anirudh Shravan.

“Providing work is not enough to sustain our lives. We need infrastructure facilities and more importantly, many villages are facing acute water problem. Without water, how can we survive there? So, we have decided to go to big cities in search of livelihood,” said one of migrant labour when contacted.

The situation in Koppal, Raichur, Yadagiri, Bidar districts are also similar. People are seen boarding trains along with their family members to big cities.
