New Delhi: India's Rio Olympic stars Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Jitu Rai have been conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards, which is the highest sporting honour in the country.
While shuttler Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi finished podiums in Rio, gymnast Dipa and shooter Jitu missed medals by a whisker.
Since India had sent their biggest contingent to the Rio Games, a large number of nominations were received for these awards this year, which were considered by the Selection Committees. Sindhu became the first Indian woman athlete to win a Silver medal at the Olympic Games.
The Hyderabad shuttler was in top form and closed out big matches in style against top-ranked opponents. However, Sindhu failed to cross the final hurdle but didn't go down without a fight.
Sakshi came from behind in all of her bouts to snatch the win from her opponent Kyrgyzstani opponent in the dying minutes of her Bronze medal bout.
Also, Ajinkya Rahane became the only cricketer to receive the Arjuna Award this year. Steeplechaser Lalita Babar, boxer Shiva Thapa, hockey players VR Raghunath, Gurpreet Singh and shooter Apurvi Chandela were a few among the athletes who have been conferred with the Arjuna Award.
