New Delhi: Days after the party's top brass praised the armed forces and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army in PoK, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Tuesday termed the surgical strikes carried out across the LoC in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) as "fake" and accused the BJP of making political capital out of it.

On the same day, former Home Minister P Chidambaram said, “UPA did PoK strikes too, but it is up to the present government to give proof of the surgical strikes.” "Every Indian wants surgical strikes against Pakistan but not a fake one to extract just political benefit by BJP. Politics over national interest," Nirupam tweeted.

The Maharashtra Congress leader's remarks came after the Army carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control in PoK and destroyed seven terror launch pads on September 28 night.

The surgical strikes were carried out by Indian forces in the backdrop of the September 18 terror attack on an army camp in Uri town of Jammu and Kashmir in which 17 Indian soldiers were martyred. Two more soldiers died of injuries later.

Nirupam who is the president of the Mumbai Congress Committee has been an MP for three terms. “The much-hyped surgical strike on last Wednesday night was not the only time that Army had crossed the LoC to take punitive action,” Chidambaram said this in an interview to CNN News 18.

However, the Congress has slammed Nirupam for calling the surgical strikes as fake. "Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have unequivocally supported the surgical strikes and the party has full faith in the armed forces," the Congress said.

'There is no reason to raise questions about the announcement made by the DGMO (Director General of Military Operation),' party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, adding, "Indian Army has conducted strikes in the past also."
