New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi's appointment as Congress president on Monday appeared imminent with members of the Congress Working Committee, party’s highest decision making body, unanimously voicing "strong sentiment" for his elevation for the first time at a meeting.

In a rare instance, Rahul Gandhi chaired the key meet of the Congress Working Committee on Monday as party president Sonia Gandhi stayed away because she is unwell.

It is Sonia who always presides over the CWC meetings. She has been reportedly ill ever since the Varanasi roadshow where she kicked off her party’s campaign for Uttar Pradesh.

Rahul’s presiding over the meeting comes at a time when there is a growing demand over his elevation. It was party veteran A K Antony who set the ball rolling at the meeting,

which lasted for four hours, when he spoke about the need for Rahul to take over the mantle of the 130-year-old party from Sonia Gandhi.
