New Delhi: Terming the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in Maharashtra municipal polls as a "mandate for demonetisation", Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday said the opposition parties should now understand the mood of the country.

"The BJP has registered a massive victory in the municipal council polls in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The results have shown mirror to those opposing the Prime Minister's demonetisation move," the Minister for Human Resource Development told reporters at the BJP headquarters here.

"This is response of the people despite the opposition provocating them against demonetisation. People have understood...when will opposition parties understand?" Javadekar said.

The BJP has emerged as the single largest party, winning 980 seats in the Maharashtra civic polls conducted in 147 municipal councils. Out of the 147 posts of municipal council presidents, the BJP has won 52.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated people of these states. "These results suggest that people want all-round progress of the nation and will not tolerate corruption and misgovernance."

Javadekar said people are supporting Prime Minister Modi for his decisive move against black money and corruption.

He said on Tuesday morning, the BJP Parliamentary Party also hailed its Maharashtra unit for the "impressive victory".
