New Delhi: Malkajgiri MP Ch Malla Reddy raised the issue of rejuvenation works at Ramanna Kunta Lake of Secunderabad Cantonment during the zero hour in Lok Sabha on Monday. The MP alleged that the area was blocked by local Army. Malla Reddy explained the house about how water from this lake was earlier used for drinking and other domestic purposes by people living around it.

But, today there is an unbearable pollution level, due to the sewage of upper colonies which is directly connected to the lake. He said that the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funds, of Rs 400 crore, to develop Ramanna Kunta Lake were stalled by the local army which did not accord permission. Subsequently, his efforts to take up the restoration works under “Mission Kakatiya” with the help of the State government is on hold due to no permission from the local Army.

Malla Reddy urged the Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to instruct Ministry of Defence to allow rejuvenation of Ramanna Kunta Lake by local civic body or Cantonment Board. He also requested the Ministry of Defence to take up this issue in all earnestness as thousands of residents living around the lake are facing hardships due to foul smell and unhygienic conditions prevailing there. The place has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and the residents are prone to diseases like dengue and malaria.
