Mumbai: An independent MLA in Maharashtra has said people in the country do not show any concern for the plight of farmers even as they bother much about the runs scored by cricketers.

"There are many people in this country to count every run scored by Sachin Tendulkar but nobody cares for the farmers who work in their field daily," Omprakash Babarao, alias Bacchu Kadu, said addressing a rally on the issues of farmers in Shrirampur tehsil of Ahmednagar district last night. Kadu had recently stoked a controversy while trying to refute the perceived links between alcoholism and farmers suicide by saying that actress Hema Malini "drinks heavily" but she hasn't committed suicide yet.

As his comments on the actress drew sharp reactions, the MLA from Achalapur in Amravati district tried to defend himself saying he was talking about Hema Malini's drinking "in films and not in her personal life." The legislator was arrested last year for allegedly assaulting an official at the state secretariat here. The secretariat staff had gone on strike demanding action against him.
