Visakhapatnam: Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh has said his ministry will soon announce steel policy in the country for which the draft had already been put on the public domain.Addressing a pressing conference, concluding his two-day visit to the steel plant here on Sunday, Singh said his ministry has received several suggestions and important among them would be incorporated in the draft. It will be placed before the Cabinet for its approval.
Stating that the steel industry in the country was under stress for the last three years due to the volatile international markets and also imports from other countries, he said the imports have been reduced by 26 per cent due to the anti-dumping duty imposed by the government to save the Indian steel industry.
Predicting bright future for Indian steel industry as its performance has improved during the last six months, he said the demand for steel in the country has been increased and the Indian steel industry was now able to produce steel as per the demand.
He said the target for steel production in the country has been increased to 300 million tonnes by 2030 from the present 120 million tonnes. The production was 90 million tonnes last year.Singh said India was the third largest steel producer in the world after China and Japan and is trying to occupy second position by improving its production in future.
As per the 'Make in india' programme, the steel produced in the country should be used in the country only. There was a proposal that the steel requirements of various ministries should be tendered from the steel producing companies in the country only. He said the proposal will be placed before the Cabinet for its approval.
Asked about the expansion of various public sector steel plants in the country, the Minister said the public sector steel plants have sufficient land available with them and they can go for expansion at any time.To another question on the allotment of captive mines for the Visakhapatnam steel plant, which was a long pending issue, the Minister said ministry of mines was looking into the matter and it would take a decision on it.
He said there was no proposal to merge the Visakhapatnam steel plant with the National Mineral Development Corporation.
Earlier, Birender Singh inaugurated a symposium on “Digital Economy for New India” organised by the plant in Ukkunagaram and highlighted the importance of digital economy in eradication of corruption and enhancing transparency.He said that digital transactions would hasten the pace of development in the country. Chairman and Managing Director of the plant P Madusudhan was present.
